We Are The 2 Old Farts – Out And About. Welcome to Season 1, Episode 2 where we introduce ourselves. We tell you who we are, where we are from and how we got here.  So come join us in our shenanigans as we take you on our journey. We are The 2 Old Farts – Out And About and this is our Podcast!

All I can say is – it’s a process. It’s been more work than I thought it would be. Getting the RSS feed created. Figuring out how to create a teaser with Audacity. Working with Audacity to add intro music to my teaser. Oh, even working on a script for the teaser.

This has definitely been more work than I thought. It isn’t as easy as just sitting in front of a camera and talking. There are many pieces and parts to making it work. Ha – making it work. I don’t know if it is even working. We haven’t even cracked 200 views on this webpage. Who knows what will come of this.

My dad told me that he has his podcast equipment (HD camera + Audio Technica mic and headphones). Then after he gets the equipment he – like most of us here in Central Texas – was affected by the allergy season. Mountain Cedar I believe it is. I hope he is feeling better today so we can do an equipment check. I am getting antsy. I want to get this thing started.

So today I did a thing – I created an RSS feed. I heard this is an important piece to having a podcast. So here it is:

So what is an RSS feed and why do you need it? RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. The RSS feed is a file that allows a person to subscribe to content and stay up to date (in real time) when there is new content.

It was an extremely easy thing to – just go to RSS.com and create an account – it’s that simple. It was even simpler because we created (paid for) an image/logo for our podcast. It’s amazing how simple this whole process has been. I can’t believe that “The 2 Old Farts” wasn’t already taken and used. Ok – someone is using the name for the Google/Gmail account – but I figured we could just add “210” to the end ([email protected]) since we live in the 210 area code.

I hope my father has ordered his microphone and video camera for this endeavor. Ok, I know you “technically” don’t need a camera for a podcast – but I like the idea of having one and using it. I figure we can publish the video of it on Youtube. Anything we can do to increase our viewership and grow the brand will be great for spreading the word. I want this to be fun for my father but at the same time not be like another job.

Yesterday, Christmas Day, was our first official outing as “The 2 Old Farts – Out and About.” It was also a chance for us all to get together and exchange Christmas gifts. For our outing my wife and I decideded to visit Mad Pecker Brewing (Mad Pecker Brewing Company – San Antonio, Texas). It’s a place my dad and I have frequented before and it was also open on Christmas Day.

As it usually is, it has a great customer base, really good food, and very good beer. It is by far and away 1 of my favorite local breweries in San Antonio. They have a very good and varied food menu. The space is large, clean and entertaining. It was there that I had my first face-to-face meeting/discussion with my dad regarding our new podcast venture.

I had previously emailed him a list of equipment to look over and purchase. And as usual he hadn’t looked at it. He read the email but didn’t do anything more than that. I am still in the process of getting the rest of the equipment needed. I have procured the following for this new podcast venture:

Camcorder (Panasonic V770 – used)
HDMI cable for the camcorder
Podcast mic (Rode – new)
Mixer (Yamaha MG10XU – used)
XLR cable for the podcast mic

Things that I am still waiting for:
Tripods (for the camcorder and podcast mic)
Headphone 1/4 inch adapter

I’ve given my dad some homework – he is to go out and read up on what a podcast is. Listen to some. Get ideas. Take notes. Write down those notes. I will probably have to call him later today to see if he has begun his homework. Speaking of homework – I didn’t know that podcasts are usually audio only. I thought they were both audio and video. If I record us with both audio and video and post it to Youtube, is it still a podcast?

As far as preparations go, excluding the actual equipment that I have on hand and on the way, I also created this website, I also created an Instagram, Twitter, Discord and Twitch page for The 2 Old Farts. I also created an Outlook email address and a Google (Gmail) email address. I did the Google thing so that we would be able to upload our videos to Youtube. Unfortunately my Google/Gmail account isn’t the same as our Outlook email account – so I added 210 to the end of the email ([email protected] vs [email protected]). Adding the 210 made sense due to our Area Code. I created all of these accounts in the hopes that if this thing takes off, we can expand our reach.

It is our hope that this will not only be fun for the 2 of us, but also for all of you. Whoever and wherever you may be. So sit back, take it easy and be on the lookout for The 2 Old Farts because we are Out and About!
